My J1 experience in Chicago this past summer was truly unforgettable, thanks to the incredible support from CIEE. I had the opportunity to work in the vibrant River North area, a bustling part of downtown Chicago that was filled with excitement. What made the experience even more special was being paired with my best friend, making every day at work feel more enjoyable. The location was ideal—our job was within walking distance, which allowed us to enjoy the city's energy as we made our way to and from work each day.
On our days off, we took full advantage of Chicago's offerings, exploring the beach, strolling along the Magnificent Mile, and enjoying the scenic Riverwalk. Our job also came with some great perks, including discounts at numerous local restaurants and cafes, which made it easier to enjoy the city's renowned food scene.
In addition to work, Chicago’s social scene was thriving, with a number of Irish-themed nights and boat parties that brought people together. We also experienced the city's vibrant nightlife, from jazz clubs to the trendy nightclubs in the West Loop, which gave us a well-rounded taste of the city's culture.
While the work was demanding, the independence and financial rewards were invaluable. The well-paying job allowed us to save up for travel, which became one of the highlights of the trip. After our time in Chicago, we embarked on an unforgettable journey across the U.S., visiting Nashville, Las Vegas, and road-tripping through California. From exploring Yosemite National Park to enjoying the sights of San Francisco, Monterey, and Los Angeles, it was an adventure that enriched my understanding of American culture and allowed me to create lasting memories. Remarkably, we still managed to save money, making the trip even more rewarding.
Looking back, my J1 experience was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It gave me the chance to build professional skills, forge lasting friendships, and explore new places—all while gaining a deeper appreciation for the diverse culture of the United States. I couldn’t recommend this experience enough—it was life-changing in every sense.
